This one little tree
sits in a shaft of light.
While others, that hold on to the same steep, shallow soil,
remain dark.
It lasts only minutes, fading light of the day’s sun.
“Will these lingering rays be what it takes to win the race to the canopy?Breaking into the sky before the understory competition?”

I wonder.
“You fool”, The little tree answers.
“That is where you always get it wrong.
Survival of the fittest, right smarty?
Don’t you know that our roots are all intertwined
on this shallow rocky hill?
As I am blessed with the last hour of the day,
I imbue the soil with that light
to be shared freely
Among my community
as we converse in the language of matter
beneath the surface.”
